Thai Nguyen, located in the center of Viet Bac region, neighbored on Hanoi, is the bridge connected between Viet Bac - Northern Delta and bordered by developed economic provinces: Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh. Thai Nguyen is far 80 km from Hanoi, and 60 km from Noi Bai International Airport.

The population of Thai Nguyen Province is 1.2 million, includes 8 ethnic groups; 650,000 people in working age. The total natural area of 3,541km2 divides into 9 administrative units: Thai Nguyen City, Song Cong Town and 7 districts; with 180 wards and communes.

Thai Nguyen has favorable traffic system like railways, waterway and highways connected to other provinces (Hanoi - Thai Nguyen, Thai Nguyen - Bac Giang - Lang Son railways; Thai Nguyen - Quang Ninh waterway; and highways are connected to Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc provinces, national roads No.3, No.1B, No.37; Highway Hanoi - Thai Nguyen is under process of site clearance).

Thai Nguyen has its potential to develop industry, there are a lot of state-owned enterprises located in the province: metallurgy (cast iron, steel and products made from steel); manufactured mechanics; producing construction materials (cement) and it has a developed light industry (textiles and garments) which attracts lot of domestic and foreign investors.

Besides to the favorable geological and natural conditions for development and investment, Thai Nguyen is also known as an educational - training center for technical-scientific cadres provided for midland provinces, mountainous regions of Viet Bac and Tay Bac; ranks the 3rd nationwide with 21 universities, colleges with hundred thousands of students.

Thai Nguyen is the homeland of famous tea internal and external. The total area is over 16,000 ha, ranks the 2nd after Lam Dong, the quality is the best nationwide, yield of fresh tea is 100,000 tons/year, and the dried one is 25,000 tons/year.

It has potential to develop ecological tourism, historical culture and resorts with famous landscapes such as: Nui Coc Lake, ATK Historical Monument, Phuong Hoang Cave etc… Tours can be easily organized to other provinces in region.

In recent years, with more and more improved investment environment, available potential investment advantage, and opened preferential policy, Thai Nguyen province has attracted a lot of investment projects. Especially, in 2007 and first 6 month of 2008, Thai Nguyen have attracted 127 projects with registered capital approximately VND 50,000 billion (USD 3.3 billion), of which there are a lot of project invested by giant groups.

Economic structure currently are industry: 40%, services: 38%, agriculture and forestry: 22%. Target up to 2010 is industry: 45%, services: 39%, agriculture and forestry: 16% to become a developed industry province before 2020.
